Tank and optional filter care. Original guide illustration; compare the parts with your manual.

1. Match the model and parts

With the machine cool, empty and unplugged, check the underside nameplate for EC685 or EC685 EX:4. Compare the frother and tabbed filter with the linked manual. The support page is on a US domain but its download is English International. Use the manual supplied for your regional appliance; no US voltage or electrical compatibility is inferred.

Region: English International manual 57132C8997_01_0626; regional nameplate must match

Parts: Three buttons, steam dial, removable frother and tabbed perforated filter as pictured in this manual

Not covered: EC680; Dedica Arte EC885; Maestro EC950; Modified steam wand; Different filter design; Regional instructions that differ from this manual.

2. Prepare

Stop and get help

Stop for a damaged cord, burning smell, liquid leaking from the appliance body, all lights flashing while the machine does not work, or a holder that remains hot or pressurized. Disconnect when safe and contact De’Longhi Customer Services. Keep the casing, boiler and internal steam circuit closed.

Is the appliance undamaged, with delivery stopped and parts cool and unplugged for any hands-on work?

  • Yes — Keep hands clear of outlets during the specific powered water or steam steps below.
  • No — Stop for a damaged cord, burning smell, liquid leaking from the appliance body, all lights flashing while the machine does not work, or a holder that remains hot or pressurized. Disconnect when safe and contact De’Longhi Customer Services. Keep the casing, boiler and internal steam circuit closed.
  • Not sure — Save a preparation record and compare the matching manual before continuing.

Does your EC685 or EC685 EX:4 match English International manual 57132C8997_01_0626, including the three buttons, original frother and tabbed filter?

  • Yes — Continue only with the controls and parts pictured in this manual.
  • No — Find the manual supplied for your region and component version. This guide cannot confirm a different version.
  • Not sure — Save a preparation record and compare the matching manual before continuing.

Is the symptom absent coffee delivery, without a body leak, burning smell or all-lights fault?

  • Yes — Begin with water supply and accessible parts.
  • No — Use Customer Services for a body leak or fault; an ordinary slow brew has a separate check.
  • Not sure — Save a preparation record and compare the matching manual before continuing.

Can you safely remove and reseat the intact tank and inspect the cool original filter?

  • Yes — Check these user-accessible causes before retrying.
  • No — A damaged valve, stuck holder or inaccessible blockage needs support.
  • Not sure — Save a preparation record and compare the matching manual before continuing.

4. Follow and record

Complete the checks before recording physical work. Follow steps in order.

  1. Record the starting condition

Stop delivery and switch off. After cooling, unplug before handling parts. Record whether the tank was empty, low or already filled when the failure occurred.

Look for: An empty tank is an observed condition; it does not prove a pump fault.

    Manual: p6 §2; p13 §14
  2. Fill the tank

Lift the tank by its handle, add fresh clean water up to but not above MAX, and check for a crack or damaged valve.

Look for: An intact tank contains water before any powered check.

    Manual: p6 §2; fig1–2
  3. Open the tank valves by seating

Return the tank to its normal position and press down lightly so the valves at the bottom open.

Look for: The tank rests in its normal seat without forcing it.

    Manual: p6 §2 step2; p13 §14
  4. Check the cooled filter path

Inspect the holder spout holes, filter and original perforated insert. If dirty, complete Clean the coffee filters first. If the insert is missing or damaged, obtain the correct part before continuing.

Look for: Filter and holder outlets are clear and the original insert is present.

    Manual: p10 §11.2; p13 §14
  5. Observe one normal delivery

Reassemble, place a cup under the spouts and use the normal power controls. Wait for steady coffee-ready lights before a normal brew. Keep the holder attached during delivery and observe whether coffee emerges.

Look for: Record delivery present or still absent. End a failed attempt rather than repeatedly running the machine.

    Manual: pp6–7 §§3–4; p13 §14
  6. Choose the next action

If delivery is still absent, record the symptom for De’Longhi. Limescale is one listed possible cause: use the complete descaling task when indicated and only if its prerequisites can be met. Do not infer an internal repair from this check.

Look for: A failed observation has a support or documented maintenance route; it is not marked as restored delivery.

    Manual: p13 §14; pp10–11 §12

5. Keep your result

Record what you observed. A completed checklist does not certify that equipment is repaired.

When to check again

No coffee is delivered.

Repeat the check if this symptom returns. Any reminder date is your own plan; the manual gives no scheduled interval for this check.
